The Ultimate Answer To The Ultimate Question
Let's say your Mom died. I ask, "Why do you care?"
You say, "Because she's my mom!"
"Why does that matter?"
"We were close."
"So why do you have to get all worked up about it?"
"Because she meant a lot to me."
"What's so great about that?"
"What do you mean?"
"I mean why does that matter?"
"Because I value her."
"Why?"
"Because I choose to."
"Why?"
"Because it's the right thing to do."
"So? What's so bad about doing the wrong thing?"
"Because it would offend her."
"So?"
"I care about her feelings."
"Why do her feelings matter?"
"Because I value our relationship."
"Why value anything?"
"Because it's moral."
"What makes moral decisions preferable?"
"It makes me happy."
"So? Why do you want to be happy? Why not feel unhappy?"
"Because I don't like it."
"I'm not convinced."
"Because it's the right thing."
"What makes it right?"
"I don't know."
Exactly.
The ultimate question is "Why?" and the ultimate answer is "I don't know." Everything boils down to that. Everything. Why is my chair red? Because that's what the manufacturer chose. Why? Because it sells. Why? Because people like it. -> Why? I don't know. <-
So, why do we care whether we go to heaven or hell? Why do we care that we'll be happier in heaven? What's so great about happiness? Well, I don't know, but I think I'll choose heaven anyway.
